Answer to Query No. 0109

Dear Madam,

After thorough analysis of the novella 'The Old man and the Sea', we turned up with the following conclusions:-

1. MAN vs MAN

This can be found in the description of relationship between Santiago & Manolin and that of Manolin's parents to Santiago & Manolin.
At the time of need, when the Santiago was facing such a hard time, rather than helping him, Manolin's parents pulled Manolin out of Santiago's company and directed him to some other fisherman's apprenticeship.

2. MAN vs ANIMAL

The example to this can easily be found out by the struggle between Marlin and Santiago, and when Santiago is carrying the dead Marlin towards the shore.
As in the first case, Santiago wants to KILL Marlin for his own satisfaction, may it be of Pride, Honour, Victory, or anything else.
And second time it can be seen when Santiago is carrying the Marlin towards the shore. He keeps thinking that how a lot of people will consume this Marlin that he is carrying.

3. MAN vs GOD/FATE

This can be cited from the example of struggle between the great Mako Sharks and Santiago.
Although he very well knows that he cannot defeat the sharks by all his means, but he still keeps fighting.

4. MAN vs SELF

The example to this can be found in the 3 day struggle of Santiago with Marlin.
He tries to defy all his injuries and sleeplessness, and keeps carrying on his fight with the Marlin.
